Abstract:
This editorial introduces the 2025 thematic issue of Revista Muzeelor, dedicated to the evolving functional relationship between museums and tourism, framed as an open question: Museums and tourism—an assumed challenge? The call invited theoretical and applied reflections on how consciously Romanian museums integrate this perspective at strategic and operational levels, while keeping the journal’s recurring topics open. From fifteen proposals, the editors selected six articles and an exhibition review, combining rigorous research with conceptually dense professional contributions meant to stimulate critical dialogue and reaffirm the journal’s role as a forum for debate.
The issue situates museums within the post-pandemic resurgence of cultural tourism and highlights the need to understand visitors’ distinct motivations, expectations, and consumption rhythms. While the synergy between heritage and tourism is evident, the editorial emphasizes that shared vocabularies, comparable indicators, and evidence-based cross-sector analyses remain rare—yet essential for linking cultural resources to their economic, social, and symbolic impacts. Museums are also tasked with safeguarding authenticity and ethical interpretation, resisting trivialization. The assembled texts offer complementary perspectives on museum publics—touristic, local, and specialized—underscoring a theme whose relevance will only intensify.
