Abstract:
This work is about the correspondence between Roberto Longhi and Teodor Ionescu starting from 1959 till 1969 with 71 letters. This correspondence is available partly in Sibiu and partly in Longhi’s archive in Florence. During this longtime collaboration many of the masterpieces belonging to the Brukenthal Museum were studied by Ionescu and subjected to Longhi as well as to many other important art historians of the time: Arslan, Argan, Gnudi, Ragghianti, Valcanover, Morassi, etc. Thus this correspondence shows one of the most significant partnerships but not the only one started by Ionescu. The correspondence has been completely transcribed and reorganised chronologically, so as to be able to rebuild the various phases of debate between the two scholars and identify the gaps and periods of pause or interruption. Ionescu’s essential contribution as a pioneer of Romanian museography during the Cold War period clearly emerges in this correspondence, in which he engages with Roberto Longhi, a leading art historian and critic on the international scene, thus allowing scholars to gain first-hand knowledge of their respective methodological approaches to the analysis of masterpieces, the development of the exchange of ideas, the resulting attribution process, and, last but not least, the personal relationships between the two.
