Abstract:

In 2020 the Romanian museums celebrated 45 years since the establishment of the Regional Conservation Laboratories. The present article offers a historic perspective on the conservation-restoration activity at the National Museum of Transylvanian History (MNIT) in Cluj. Heritage conservation activities started here, respectively in the predecessor institution, the Transylvanian Museum Society, founded in 1859, long before the establishment in Romania, in 1975, of the regional conservation laboratories. The article presents a brief history of the early
conservation activities, offers details on the conservation-restoration activity in the Regional Conservation Laboratory founded at MNIT in 1975 and on the current situation in the lab, followed by brief considerations on future possibilities.
