Abstract:
People with disabilities face multiple barriers when trying to take part in and to enjoycultural-related activities. The European Union, party to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and to the Marrakesh Treaty, is continuously working towards granting people with or without disabilities equal rights in general and equal access to cultural life in particular. Studies covering cultural consumption and habits of people with disabilities in the EU are very few. The aim of this article is to present the results of a study conducted in 2020 regarding the accessibility level of Romanian museums and public collections for people with disabilities. While access is difficult for people with disabilities in general, the visually impaired are provided the least accessibility features. Among the reasons why these buildings are poorly equipped are their status as heritage listed buildings (which makes modifications illegal or considerably difficult) or the fact that these institutions use rented spaces on which they have no administrative rights.
