Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to observe the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the Romanian cultural sector, focusing on the one hand on the preventive measures taken by the authorities and, on the other hand, on the cultural institutions’ response to the pandemic phenomenon and the newly generated context. The conclusions of the research report show that the authorities focused mainly on financially supporting the cultural institutions while adapting the restrictive legislative measures to the evolution of the pandemic. The response of the cultural institutions varied considerably depending on the pre-existing infrastructure, the human resources in store, the type of cultural product they offered, the availability and prior preparation of the administered patrimony and, last but not least, the creativity of the personnel. Therefore, it can be argued that the most important elements supporting the continuous activity of the cultural institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic were dependent on technology and online infrastructure as a medium of connecting with the public, but ultimately, the personnel and the involvement of the public in the cultural act have kept the engine of the cultural sector running.
