Abstract:

The theme of the 2020 International Museum Day was Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion. It was chosen as a result of a long term change recorded in the current activities of museums, worldwide. After a rather long process of change, which started in the seventh decade of the last century, museums became not only witnesses, but, also, actors of the wider concern regarding issues as combating social exclusion, especially based on race, social status, level of wealth and education, gender, ethnicity or religion. Museums became fora for debate and promoters of the public policies devoted to the increase of democracy and equality. A special moment was caused by the current pandemic, which increased the public expectations on museums to deliver cultural goods, many times, in a digital format, in order to grant the social need for access to cultural and natural heritage. In Romania, such a debate is still at its beginnings.
