Culture within Public Space. The Analysis of Cultural Events Developed in Bucharest [2009]
2008

Description
The study on the cultural events developed in Bucharest started from the premise of their double role – of shaping the city’s inhabitants’ perceptions on the free-access space and of figuring a city brand by defining tourist attractions through artistic events.
The research objectives consisted in identifying the public-space characteristics from the viewpoint of the spaces themselves as well as of their geographical distribution.
The data were collected from administrative institutions, such as the Bucharest City Hall, Metrorex, RATB, British Council, the Polish Institute, the Czech Institute.
The results suggest a significant growth of the artistic presence in the public space of Bucharest in the period 2003-2007. We notice a difference between the private organisers, who prefer the central areas in Bucharest, and the public actors and non-governmental organisations that organise events both in the central areas and in residential neighbourhoods. Furthermore, the data suggest a structure of the central-peripheral area regarding the set-up of cultural events within the public space. The material contains maps and tables with the events developed in this period.
