Description

On October 29th, 2023, at 11:00, the National Institute for Cultural Research and Training – Culturadata launched The 2022 Cultural Consumption Barometer. Cultural participation and democratic perspectives, as part of the National Theatre Festival, at ARCUB – Column Hall (Hanul Gabroveni, 84-90, Lipscani Street).

Reaching its 18th edition, the most important national study measuring the practices of cultural consumption returns after a three-year break caused by the social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period in which it was replaced by studies measuring participation trends.

Along with renowned guests from academia and cultural professionals, during the launch event, study coordinators, PhD Assoc. Prof. Carmen Croitoru – General Manager of Culturadata and PhD Assoc. Lect. Anda Becuț Marinescu – Culturadata Research Director, presented the main results of the Barometer, with emphasis on the relationship between cultural values, quality of education and democratic principles at the level of society.

The 2022 Cultural Consumption Barometer assesses the changes in cultural consumption practices, emphasising its particularities among young people, and analyses the relationship between culture and democracy, for the first time in Romania.

The results of the study confirm the trends identified during the pandemic, respectively the predominant shift in cultural consumption toward online and non-public spaces. Analyses show that consumption gaps between different social and demographic categories are maintained, with a lower trend of participation of women, the elderly, of people in rural areas and those with a low level of education and income (below the national average).

This year’s edition of the Barometer highlights the need to implement cultural education initiatives, as well as the usefulness of developing measures that closely follow a model of community development through culture.

The English translation of the 2022 Cultural Consumption Barometer in digital format will be available soon.

The 2022 Cultural Consumption Barometer is based on an opinion poll conducted by the Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy (IRES), between September – October 2022, on a nationally representative sample for the population aged 18 and over. The approximate volume of the sample is 1035 persons, with a maximum error of + / -3.1%, at a confidence level of 95%. The application of the questionnaires was made by the CATI method, on a simple, random sample, by generating telephone numbers with valid format within the Romanian territory, by the RDD method (Random Digit Dialling).
